Peace with God through Jesus Christ

The Olive Press – September 2017

Are you Anxious?

An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up. (Proverbs 12:25)
A father paces in the waiting room of a hospital. His ten-year-old daughter was just taken into surgery for an appendectomy. The doctors assured him it is a routine procedure, but like any parent he is anxious. He thinks, “What if something goes wrong? What if they find a much bigger problem?”
A single mother sits at her small kitchen table. In front of her is a frightening stack of bills. With her face buried in her hands and tears flowing from her eyes, she anxiously wonders, “How am I going to pay these? Will I have enough money to continue to send my children to daycare as I work three different jobs? Will I be able to put food on the table?”
A college freshman just watched his parents drive away after dropping him off at the beginning of the school year. A thousand anxious thoughts are racing through his mind. “Will I be able to make friends here? What if I can’t keep up with my school work? What am I going to do with my life after this?”
Anxiety. It’s a feeling born out of fear of the unknown. It causes stress. It keeps us up at night and makes us think about the worst-case scenario. Solomon wrote, “An anxious heart weighs a man down.” Anxiety makes daily life a chore. It may be brought on by all kinds of difficulties, but at its root, anxiety is ultimately caused by forgetfulness. We become anxious when we forget about God’s promises to us.
In his God-given wisdom, King Solomon reveals a solution for the anxiety that we face. He writes, “but a kind (or good) word cheers him up.” When we are anxious and forget God’s promises, we need to be reminded of them. The perfect cure for anxiety is found in God’s Good Word.
That father pacing in the waiting room of the hospital finds a cure for his anxiety in John 10 where Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd…my sheep listen to my voice…I give them eternal life and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.”
That fretful mother sitting at her table surrounded by bills finds a cure for her anxiety in Jesus’ words from Matthew 6 where he reassures us that our heavenly Father knows all our needs and then says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
That nervous college freshman finds a cure for his worries in God’s promise from Joshua 1, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
The Bible tells us that if God loves us so much that he sent his Son Jesus to die on a cross and save us, then we can find assurance that he will also care for our every earthly need. So if you are anxious, go to God’s Word—take refuge in the Means of Grace! Be reminded of God’s promises to you and you will find two things: help with that anxiety and a reason to rejoice!

Charger Challenge

Mt. Olive’s K-8th grade students are gearing up this fall for their second annual Charger Challenge! God blessed last year’s Charger Challenge fundraiser tremendously. As a result, the students are enjoying many items purchased with 2016 Charger Challenge monies: new soccer goals, classroom furniture, playground addition, a math/science night, and musical instruments for the classrooms…to name a few! Just like last year, the Charger Challenge is the ONLY fundraiser for the school year! Students are seeking donors to sponsor them to walk the four mile trek, from Lower North Mankato (starting at Spring Lake Park) to Upper North Mankato (Culver’s) and back again! Any monetary amount is acceptable and 100% of the money collected goes to our goal of raising $18,000. Receipts for tax purposes are also available! The collected money will be used to purchase 10 new iPads, a set of gym scooters, and a new high jump pit. In addition, the money raised supports the special programs and events enjoyed throughout the school year, such as Grandparents’ Day, Cheers or Tears Breakfast, Pastries with Parents, Fall Festival at McGowan Farm, Senior day, and Eighth Grade Graduation, to name many.
We invite YOU to be a part of the Charger Challenge! You are welcome to walk with us, Friday, September 29—rain date of October 6—, cheer us on at a water station, and/or join us for a provided picnic lunch at 11:45 at Shelter #1. Would you like to help by sponsoring the students? Sponsor forms will be available in the narthex beginning September 10. Thank you for your generous support of our Christian day school! Contact Kristin Lehne at 507 340 8750 or to ask questions, make a donation, or to volunteer to help the day of the Charger Challenge.

From the PTF Trash for Cash:

Thank you for turning in all your Campbell’s Labels for Education. You had enough for FOUR footballs and a mesh bag!

Very Special Blessing

At the end of August, MVL celebrated a very special blessing. MVL is now debt-free! Their Board of Directors voted to pay off the last of their individual loans, thereby eliminating the debt! What an unbelievable blessing from our Lord. Consider that in January of 2009, the debt stood at $1.8 million. We join together in thanking our gracious God for the blessings that He has showered on us in so many ways.
May God continue to bless all of us as we work together “training students for Christian lives on earth and for eternity!”
Principal Tim Plath

From the Editor

In honor of Veterans Day, I’d like the veterans of our congregation to send a super-short email my way for the fun purpose of picking the color of the November Olive Press.
The only 3 rules are 1) the Subject line is the military branch in which you have served, 2) you only vote once, and 3) you vote by email to If necessary, the message text can be a repeat of the Subject line. However, the text may be blank.
The colors available to me are as follows:

  • Mint green (National Guard)
  • Golden yellow (Army)
  • Roman red (Marine)
  • A red that is a slight pink named Cherry (Coast Guard)
  • Blue (Navy)
  • A sky blue named Bottlerocket (Air Force)

If a tie should occur, I’ll assign the tied branches in alphabetical order to heads and tails (also in alphabetical order) and then text my brother (Army, Air Force) and ask him to flip a coin at his convenience & let me know the results. I’ll also include the stats in the November Olive Press. All votes must be received by 1300 hours, soldier, on OCTOBER 11.
